A tender scene unfolded on the African savannah as a baby elephant reached up and wrapped his small trunk around his mother’s tusk, seeking comfort during their march across the plain.
Captured by photographer Corlette Wessels at Madikwe Game Park in South Africa, the moment shows the little elephant clinging tightly to his mother as the herd approaches a nearby water source.
Corlette, 42, shared, “This herd was crossing the road to reach the dam for a drink. The young ones were full of energy, but this tiny baby stood out as especially playful.”
According to Corlette, the baby elephant played with sticks and teased other young members of the herd.
When his mother eventually took his stick away, he appeared to seek her forgiveness by grasping her tusk. “I think he just wanted to tell her he was sorry and loved her,” Corlette explained. “It was a deeply affectionate moment.”
Reflecting on the images, Corlette added, “Seeing how these intelligent animals express love and respect for one another filled my heart with joy. It was truly special to witness.”
