Hadzabe Tribe Hunts and Cooks Porcupine in the Wild: A Look into 2024’s Traditional Practices

In the heart of Tanzania, the Hadzabe tribe continues to embrace their ancient traditions, including hunting porcupines in the wild—a food source that has long sustained them. This year, as they engage in the hunt, Hadzabe hunters utilize their remarkable tracking skills, following footprints and signs to locate and capture these animals. Once the porcupine is caught, the tribe gathers to prepare it over an open fire, a cooking process that is both simple and effective. The Hadzabe use minimal tools, allowing the meat to roast and develop its natural flavors from the smoke and heat of the flames. Watching them cook highlights their survival skills and adaptability, showcasing methods passed down for generations. Beyond just a meal, the gathering around the fire symbolizes unity and tradition. Tribe members share stories, bond over the meal, and keep alive the practices that define their cultural identity. In 2024, as the world changes rapidly, the Hadzabe’s steadfast connection to thei

Elephants Clash in a Mighty Battle for Herd Leadership in Kenya

In a dramatic showdown at Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, two elephants fiercely clashed as they vied for dominance over their herd.

The older elephant, a seasoned bull missing one tusk from a previous fight, faced off against a younger, determined challenger in the swampy plains.

Captured by photographer Mike McCaffrey, the encounter demonstrated the older bull’s skill in battle.

Using his remaining tusk strategically, he lifted it under the younger elephant’s tusks like a lever, twisting his trunk to throw the younger opponent off balance.

Despite enduring several direct charges, the older elephant held his ground, eventually driving the younger one back into the swamp.

McCaffrey, a travel photographer and founder of Nomadic by Nature encountered the spectacle during a 12,500-mile road trip across eastern and southern Africa.

The U.S.-born photographer, now based in Kenya, was exploring Amboseli National Park, which rests at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Known for its expansive swamplands and herds of elephants and buffalo, the park provided a stunning natural setting for the clash.

McCaffrey recalled the encounter: “Amboseli is famous for its dramatic landscape. The waters from Kilimanjaro feed the swamps and lakes, creating a haven for these large animals.” He stumbled upon the battling bulls at the swamp’s edge and felt privileged to witness the rare display.

“The animals are so massive that their movements seem almost slow, but when they collide, the cracking of their skulls and the dust cloud around them make you feel the true force of their strength.”

In the end, experience prevailed, as the older bull emerged victorious, again claiming his role as the herd’s leader.
