A heartwarming sequence of photos captured a baby elephant needing a helping hand—or trunk—from its mother after getting stuck in a pool on Botswana’s Chobe River.
he scene was documented by South African photographer Neal Cooper, 50, who spotted the elephant family as they approached the riverbank.
The young calf, only a few weeks old, initially enjoyed splashing around, but playtime turned challenging when it couldn’t climb back onto dry land.
The mother stepped in, wrapping her trunk around the calf and lifting it out of the water. With a final, gentle nudge, she helped her little one scramble up the bank.
Neal explained, “The family came to the river, and the baby wanted to play in the water. But as young as it was, the mother had to keep a close eye to ensure it stayed safe.”
He added that the mother seemed to be teaching the calf how to cool off in the mud and even navigate back to dry land when stuck.
Neal described the Chobe River as an ideal spot for observing elephant interactions, noting, “It’s fascinating to watch various elephant families interact both within their units and with other families.”
