Young Elephant Defends Watering Hole, Chases Off Pride of Lions in South Africa (VIDEO)

A dramatic scene unfolded at a South African watering hole as a fearless young elephant confronted a pride of lions, sending them scattering.

Footage from December 2016 captures the tense moment when two lionesses resting by the water’s edge were startled by the loud trumpeting of the approaching elephant. As the bull charged, the lions quickly retreated into the nearby bushes.

Watch the video at the end.

After dealing with the lionesses, the young elephant turned its attention to a larger male lion lurking in the undergrowth.

Unlike the females, the male lion chose a slower retreat, cautiously backing away as the elephant advanced.

Though the exact motivation behind the elephant’s actions is unclear, it may have perceived the lions as threatening its herd or wanted exclusive access to the water.

Either way, the encounter highlighted the elephant’s determination to take control of the scene.
