An intense moment unfolded in the Samburu National Reserve when a mother elephant fiercely defended her newborn calf from a lion’s attack.
Footage captures a lion stalking the pair, waiting for the right moment to strike. As the mother and her calf walked together, the lion, often regarded as the “King of the Jungle,” suddenly moved towards the baby elephant.
Filmed just after sunset from an open-air Maruti Jeep, the scene shows the lion sprinting toward the calf, which stood close behind its mother.
In response, the 17-year-old mother elephant, named Nablus, immediately charged to protect her young. The lion retreated, and Nablus safely led her calf away from danger.
The event was filmed by Matt Brierley, who remarked, “This is the first time lions have been documented stalking and attacking elephant calves in Samburu National Reserve.”
Nablus, part of the ‘Biblical Towns’ elephant family, is closely monitored by researchers in the reserve. Her calf is the firstborn to Nablus, who will turn 18 in April.
