It’s believed the elephant slipped into the tank while trying to access water. Rescue efforts began after the villagers raised the alarm, and a team arrived on the scene with a JCB excavator crane to assist in freeing the trapped animal. Once rescued, the calf wasted no time and ran into the nearby forest.
One villager noted that another elephant had been waiting nearby, possibly watching the calf during the ordeal.
Footage from the scene shows the baby elephant struggling to climb out of the muddy water, hindered by the tank’s tall boundary walls and the low water level.
The calf was part of a herd that had passed through the village at night, damaging several homes.
According to a resident, the herd had caused damage to five properties before the baby elephant became trapped in the water tank.
A senior forest official explained that elephants in the area often visit local irrigation reservoirs to drink. The low water level may have contributed to the calf’s fall as it reached for water.
This incident is not the first of its kind—last year, another baby elephant got stuck in the same reservoir under similar circumstances.
